October 31, 1939 - January 14, 2021
Phyllis Jean Comery joined the heavenly choir of angels peacefully from home on Jan. 14, 2021 at the age of 81, surrounded in love by her husband Alan and their children Karen and David. She and her husband, Alan Gregson Comery, celebrated 56 years of marriage on April 11, 2020. Born on Penn Street on Oct. 31, 1939, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Grace and Calvin Copenhaver. After graduating from William Penn Senior High School in 1957, she earned an Associate Degree from York Junior College, graduating in 1959. Phyllis worked for American Chain & Cable Co. before leaving to raise their two dear children. As Karen and David neared college age, Phyllis returned to work with Olin Corp. and later with General Dynamics. Owing to her loving personality and managerial skills, she rose to the position of Executive Administrator to the Plant Manager at all three companies. Phyllis is a lifetime member of Union Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was asked to join the Adult Choir at the age of 16, offering her sweet soprano voice to its musical offerings for more than 65 years. She met her husband on the choir in 1963 and they have sung together since, until her declining health brought their duet to a close. Besides singing, Phyllis served her church as a loving Sunday school teacher, a two-term Church Council member, and for many, many years as chairman of the Christian Education Committee, chief coordinator of Vacation Bible School and the annual Church Retreat at Camp Nawakwa. She wishes to be remembered for her unconditional love of children as they grew in Sunday school and toward adulthood. Her love was freely given to everyone, both child and adult, regardless of their circumstances. For this reason, Phyllis is loved by so many with whom she came in contact, whether from church, the business world, family, friends or neighbors. Besides her husband, Phyllis leaves a daughter, Karen Comery (Jereme Plank) of Dallastown; a son, David Comery (Lyndsay) of Buford, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Kiera Comery of Dallastown, and Ivy Comery and Duncan Comery of Buford. She also leaves a first cousin, Edward Trodden (Shirley) of York, with whom she grew up in the same house in their childhood and is as close as a brother; their two children, Rebecca DeLorraine of Lancaster and Jeffrey Trodden of York, and their respective families. A family-only service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, 408 W. Market St, with her pastor, the Rev. Joel Folkemer, presiding. The 10 a.m. service will be live streamed from Facebook.com/UnionYork and also directly from the church's website at www.UnionLutheran.org. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, 408 W. Market St., York PA 17401 Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St. York, PA 17403.
