Mary Catherine Young Smith Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mary Catherine Young Smith, 103, passed away at Mennohaven Health Care Center, Chambersburg on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was loved by all the Mennohaven staff. Born in York on April 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late H. Walter and Sarah (Paine) Young. She was the wife of the late Harvey E. Smith. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in January 2015. She was a 1937 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, Bradford College, and Millersville University. She taught elementary grades in the Central York School District. She was a member of Advent Lutheran Church of York where she was very active in the church’s Prayers and Stitches Club. She was an avid knitter, enjoyed doing counted cross stitch and traveling. Her greatest joy came from her family. Mary Catherine is survived by her daughters, Barbara Smith of Blue Bell and Ellen Harkins, wife of the late Philip Harkins of Chambersburg. She is also survived by two grandsons, Tim and Andrew Harkins, as well as four great-grandchildren, Aidan, Ryan, Ava, and Abigail Harkins, two sisters in law, Lois and Louise Young, and numerous nieces and nephews. A private graveside service in Mount Rose Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
